John M. Wunderling joined the Firm’s Tax, Trust and Estate group in 1999. John grew up in San Jose, graduating from Bellarmine College Preparatory and receiving a B.S.C in Finance from Santa Clara University. He graduated from Gonzaga University School of Law (magna cum laude) and from Golden Gate University School of Law in San Francisco with a LL.M in Taxation (with honors).

John’s practice focuses on income, estate and gift taxation with emphasis on wealth transfer and estate planning, post-death trust administration and probate. His practice includes structuring and implementing Revocable and Irrevocable Trusts, sophisticated tax strategies such as Defective Grantor Trusts, Family Limited Partnerships, Life Insurance Trusts, Grantor Retained Annuity Trusts and Children/Grandchildren Trusts. He is also well versed in charitable planning strategies including Charitable Lead and Remainder Trusts, as well as organizing and advising Private Charitable Foundations and other Charitable Organizations. John’s practice also includes business formation, operation, tax and business advice for corporations, limited liability companies, partnerships and other privately owned or family businesses. He also represents taxpayers in federal and state tax disputes.

John serves on the board of directors for the Silicon Valley Planned Giving Council and is the former chairperson of the San Jose Chapter of the Young Tax Lawyers Committee of the State Bar of California Taxation Section. He is a member of the American Bar Association Taxation Section, the Santa Clara County Bar Association and the Santa Clara County Estate Planning Council. He frequently speaks and presents seminars for organizations including the Section Education Institute sponsored by the State Bar of California and the National Business Institute. John recently co-authored an article with partner, Lisa Caputo, in Tax Notes Today.

John resides in Los Altos with his wife, Ruthie, two sons and a daughter.
